INTRODUCTION: Research on voice onset time (VOT) production of stops in children with CI versus NH has reported conflicting results. Effects of age and place of articulation on VOT have not been examined for children with CI. The purpose of this study was to examine VOT production by Greek-speaking children with CI in comparison to NH controls, with a focus on the effects of age, type of stimuli, and place of articulation. METHODS: Participants were 24 children with CI aged from 2;8 to 13;3 years and 24 age- and gender-matched children with NH. Words were elicited via a picture-naming task, and nonwords were elicited via a fast mapping procedure. RESULTS: For voiced stops, children with CI showed longer VOT than children with NH, whereas VOT for voiceless stops was similar to that of NH peers. Also, in both voiced and voiceless stops, the VOT differed as a function of age and place of articulation across groups. Differences as a function of stimulus type were only noted for voiced stops across groups. CONCLUSIONS: For the voiced stop consonants, which demand more articulatory effort, VOT production in children with CI was longer than in children with NH. For the voiceless stop consonants, VOT production in children with CI is acquired at a young age.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is an aromatic and medicinal plant with important properties and is used as an alternative crop in many countries of the world because of its medicinal, economic, industrial, and nutritional importance. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of low water availability on seed production and seed quality of five cultivars of basil (Mrs Burns, Cinnamon, Sweet, Red Rubin, and Thai). Irrigation levels and cultivars affected seed yield and thousand seed weight. In addition, plants that were exposed to low water availability produced seeds that germinated in a greater percentage. Additionally, root length was increased as the PEG concentration was increased in the germination solution and was affected by the low water availability of the mother plants. The length of the shoot, the length of the root and the seed vigor could not be used as indicators of low water availability on the mother plants, but these characteristics and especially the seed vigor could be used as indicators of low water availability of the seed. Furthermore, the root length and the seed vigor indicated that there is a possibility of an epigenetic effect of water availability on the seed produced under low water availability, though more work is needed.

Energy flows in perennial agro and natural ecosystems are essential and could be related to greenhouse gas emissions and increasing water demands. Energy indices and carbon and water footprint are useful tools in assessing the interaction between production systems and environmental impact inside Natura 2000 sites and enhancing ecosystem services. The main aims of this study were to determine and compare energy indices, carbon and water footprint of olive groves, orange and kiwi orchards, and grasslands within and between 2 years, located in a Natura 2000 site, using an adjusted life cycle assessment (LCA) method; and to illustrate the importance of farming systems to ecosystem services. Proportional stratified sampling was used to select 36 farm types (12 olive groves, 12 oranges, and 12 kiwi orchards) and 12 grasslands from the municipality of Amfilochia, western Greece, during 2018 and 2019. Descriptive data analysis, correlational analysis, ANOVA, and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used to summarize and analyze the data. The main energy contributors for the three farm types were fertilizers and fuel consumption. The only input for the grasslands was animal manure. Energy efficiency showed the highest performance in olive groves followed in descending order by kiwi orchards, grasslands, and orange orchards. Concerning carbon-footprint, the values were the highest for orange orchards, followed in descending order by kiwi orchards, olive groves, and grasslands. Total water footprint values were the highest for grasslands and the lowest for olive groves. For both years, regarding HCA, each cluster consisted of the same ecosystems. According to the abovementioned indices, olive groves and grasslands are the most environmental friendly ecosystems. They could contribute in the environmental protection of the Amvrakikos Gulf, a Natura 2000 site. Kiwi orchards, although they are intensive along with the orange ones, seem to be more friendly to the environment than them and their cultivation in this Natura 2000 area is recommended. Energy indices and carbon and water footprint could be used, in order to highlight the related ecosystem (dis)services.

Tooth wear (TW) is an irreversible and cumulative phenomenon causing aesthetic and functional compromise. Increasing wear has been associated with age, and various other factors have been reported to influence its type and/or severity both in individuals and groups. Increased TW may constitute a major future problem for the elderly. The present cross-sectional study aims at determining the prevalence of TW in senior citizens from Northern Greece and evaluating the patient-level associations between TW, periodontal condition, and sociodemographic factors. A sample of 363 dentate individuals, aged between 65 and 74 years, was considered according to the WHO guidelines for national pathfinder surveys and three different dentists examined the representative population groups from different urban and rural areas in Northern Greece. The examiners were calibrated prior to the survey, with an interexaminer agreement of over 85%. The simplified TWI, community periodontal index (CPI), attachment loss (AL), plaque index (DI), calculus index (CI), and sociodemographic factors were detected and measured. TW is very prevalent among senior citizens in Northern Greece, with males having been found to experience more wear. Age and oral health status, when measured by the periodontal indices AL, DI, and CI, are significantly combined with TW in both urban and rural areas.

Propolis presents notable and variable antioxidant activity depending on the territory and the local flora. As a result, propolis collected from areas presenting botanical diversity can become an intriguing research field. In the present study, we examined propolis from different areas of Samothraki, a small Greek island in the north-eastern Aegean Sea, considered a hot-spot of plant biodiversity. The analysis of propolis samples presented huge variability in the antioxidant activity, the total polyphenol content and the total flavonoids content. Propolis from two areas presented high antioxidant activity with a maximum at 1741.48 µmol of Trolox equivalents per gram of dry propolis weight, very high polyphenol content, 378.73 mg of gallic acid equivalents per gram of dry propolis weight, and high flavonoid content with a maximum concentration of 70.31 mg of quercetin equivalents per gram of dry propolis weight. The samples that presented the best qualitative characteristics were all red propolis which is a type that has never been reported in any part of Europe.

The high cost of extensive pesticide monitoring studies, required for the protection of water resources, and the necessity of early identification of environmental threats, highlighted the need for prioritization of pesticides and sampling sites to be monitored. The aim of this study was to develop an optimum surface water monitoring network at a catchment scale including only the sites of a catchment vulnerable to pesticide pollution. The identification of sampling sites vulnerable to pesticide pollution (VPS) was based on the data of an intensive monitoring survey of 302 pesticides in 102 stationary sampling sites located on the surface water network of a river basin. In the proposed methodology the left-censored data of the analytical results derived from the above mentioned monitoring campaign were included in the statistical analyses by transforming all the raw data into categorical variables and arranging them in ordinal scales based on ecotoxicological thresholds derived from pesticide toxicity tests on aquatic non-target organisms. The categorized data were subjected to Categorical Principal Component Analysis with Optimal Scaling. For the identification of the VPS, the Squared Mahalanobis Distance criterion was applied on the extracted values (scores) of the significant principal components. With this methodology a 46% reduction in the number of the monitoring stations was achieved. This approach will be valuable in establishing more cost effective monitoring schemes in the future in other basins and in developing targeted measures to eliminate or limit the effect of critical pollution sources in surface aquatic systems. Moreover, by applying the proposed methodology, historical monitoring data can be used to initiate more efficient pesticide monitoring campaigns in the future.

Maternal diet may influence offspring's health, even within well-nourished populations. Amniotic fluid (AF) provides a rational compartment for studies on fetal metabolism. Evidence in animal models indicates that maternal diet affects AF metabolic profile; however, data from human studies are scarce. Therefore, we have explored whether AF content may be influenced by maternal diet, using a validated food-frequency questionnaire and implementing NMR-based metabolomics. Sixty-five AF specimens, from women undergoing second-trimester amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis, were analysed. Complementary, maternal serum and urine samples were profiled. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified 2 dietary patterns, cluster 1 (C1, n = 33) and cluster 2 (C2, n = 32). C1 was characterized by significantly higher percentages of energy derived from refined cereals, yellow cheese, red meat, poultry, and "ready-to-eat" foods, while C2 by higher (P < 0.05) whole cereals, vegetables, fruits, legumes, and nuts. 1H NMR spectra allowed the identification of metabolites associated with these dietary patterns; glucose, alanine, tyrosine, valine, citrate, cis-acotinate, and formate were the key discriminatory metabolites elevated in C1 AF specimens. This is the first evidence to suggest that the composition of AF is influenced by maternal habitual dietary patterns. Our results highlight the need to broaden the knowledge on the importance of maternal nutrition during pregnancy.

There is growing interest for using Spectral Vegetation Indices (SVI) derived by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery as a fast and cost-efficient tool for plant phenotyping. The development of such tools is of paramount importance to continue progress through plant breeding, especially in the Mediterranean basin, where climate change is expected to further increase yield uncertainty. In the present study, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Simple Ratio (SR) and Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) derived from UAV imagery were calculated for two consecutive years in a set of twenty durum wheat varieties grown under a water limited and heat stressed environment. Statistically significant differences between genotypes were observed for SVIs. GNDVI explained more variability than NDVI and SR, when recorded at booting. GNDVI was significantly correlated with grain yield when recorded at booting and anthesis during the 1st and 2nd year, respectively, while NDVI was correlated to grain yield when recorded at booting, but only for the 1st year. These results suggest that GNDVI has a better discriminating efficiency and can be a better predictor of yield when recorded at early reproductive stages. The predictive ability of SVIs was affected by plant phenology. Correlations of grain yield with SVIs were stronger as the correlations of SVIs with heading were weaker or not significant. NDVIs recorded at the experimental site were significantly correlated with grain yield of the same set of genotypes grown in other environments. Both positive and negative correlations were observed indicating that the environmental conditions during grain filling can affect the sign of the correlations. These findings highlight the potential use of SVIs derived by UAV imagery for durum wheat phenotyping under low yielding Mediterranean conditions.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine whether psychopathologic profile is related to the location of pain in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients with myofascial and/or temporomandibular joint pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 75 painful TMD patients (39 women and 36 men) participated in the study. Participants were divided into three groups (myogenous, arthrogenous, and mixed) using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) Axis I guidelines for assessment of TMD signs and symptoms. Three psychometric instruments were used to assess the psychopathologic profile of the TMD subgroups. Patients' state and trait anxiety were assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S, STAI-T), depression was measured with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and psychosocial functioning was evaluated using the Global Disability Scale (Glo.Di.S). The three TMD groups were compared with Kruskal-Wallis test followed by pairwise Mann-Whitney tests relative to the psychometric scores. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 15.0 software. RESULTS: No significant differences were detected among the different TMD groups in the three psychometric scales; STAI-T, CES-D, Glo.Di.S (P > .05). When the psychometric scale of state anxiety (STAI-S) was considered, significant differences were revealed between the myogenous and the arthrogenous pain groups (P = .008) and also between the mixed and the arthrogenous groups (P < .001). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the psychopathologic profile is not related to the location of pain in TMD patients. However, anxiety was found to be higher in TMD patients with myogenous pain alone or combined with arthrogenous pain compared to those with only arthrogenous pain.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic abnormalities during canine parvovirus (CPV) enteritis have not been studied prospectively. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic significance of canine serum pancreas-specific lipase (Spec cPL) concentration in dogs with CPV enteritis for the presence of acute pancreatitis (AP). Puppies with naturally occurring CPV enteritis were recruited and prospectively allocated into 2 groups according to normal or increased serum Spec cPL concentration. Clinical signs, laboratory findings, and pancreas-associated variables were compared between groups, and the impact of possible AP on disease course, duration of hospitalization, and outcome was assessed. RESULTS: Serum Spec cPL concentration in 35 puppies was above the upper limit of the RI in 17/35 (48.6%) dogs (Group A) and within the RI in 18 dogs (Group B). An increased serum lipase activity was present in 29/35 (82.9%) dogs, and Group A dogs had a higher serum lipase activity than Group B (P = .006). Serum Spec cPL in Group A dogs was positively correlated with serum lipase activity at the day of presentation (r = .667; P = .003) and day of discharge (r = .628; P = .007). No statistically significant difference was found between groups (P = .233) for the presence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) (6/17 or 35.3% dogs Group A, and 8/18 or 44.4% dogs Group B), the disease course, duration of hospitalization, or outcome between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Increased serum Spec cPL is relatively common in dogs with CPV enteritis. However, such increases do not seem to correlate with the outcome of disease.

BACKGROUND: Spatial heterogeneity can have serious effects on the precision of field experimentation in plant breeding. In the present study the capacity of the honeycomb design (HD) to sample huge spatial heterogeneity was appraised. For this purpose, four trials were conducted each comprising a lentil landrace being screened for response to viruses. RESULTS: Huge spatial heterogeneity was reflected by the abnormally high values for coefficient of variation (CV) of single-plant yields, ranging 123-162 %. At a given field area, increasing the number of simulated entries was followed by declined effectiveness of the method, on account of the larger circular block implying greater intra-block heterogeneity; a hyperbolic increasing pattern of the top to bottom entry mean gap (TBG) indicated that a number of more than 100 replicates (number of plants per entry) is the crucial threshold to avoid significant deterioration of the sampling degree. Nevertheless, the honeycomb model kept dealing with variation better than the randomized complete block (RCB) pattern, thanks to the circular shape and standardized type of block that ensure the less possible extra heterogeneity with expanding the area of the block. CONCLUSIONS: Owing to the even and systematic entry allocation, breeders do not need to be concerned with the extra spatial heterogeneity that might induce the extra surface needed to expand the size of the block when many entries are considered. Instead, they could improve accuracy of comparisons with increasing the number of replicates (circular blocks) despite the concomitant greater overall spatial heterogeneity.

The aphid-transmitted Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus (MWMV; Potyvirus, Potyviridae) is an emerging pathogen in cucurbit crops in the Mediterranean basin but information on its transmitting vector species is limited. This study aimed to record the competence of 22 species of the Greek aphid fauna to vector MWMV. Timed-probe transmission experiments and arena tests were performed using laboratory colonies of aphid species abundant in field surveys; less common species were tested as apterous individuals collected directly from field plants in mass-inoculation (nonpersistent) tests. Depending on the test, aphids were tested in cohorts of 10 or 20 individuals on zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) plants and the frequency of transmission was calculated for a single aphid. Among 12 species tested in timed-probe transmission tests, Myzus persicae nicotianae (74.0%) appeared to be the most efficient vector, followed by M. persicae (48.0%), Aphis gossypii (11.8%), an unidentified Aphis sp. (11.8%), and A. spiraecola (11.0%). Alatae of nine species tested in arena tests transmitted the virus in rates varying from 0.7 to 53.6%; M. persicae was the most efficient species in virus spread. In mass-inoculation tests, the probability that apterae of 12 aphid species collected from field plants transmitted MWMV fluctuated from 0.3 to 5.3%. No transmission was obtained by Brevicoryne brassicae. The following species are reported as new vectors of MWMV: A. fabae, A. nerii, A. spiraephaga, A. umbrella, Capitophorus eleaegni, Dysaphis (Pomaphis) pyri, Macrosiphoniella sanborni, Macrosiphum rosae, Myzocallis castanicola, Myzus persicae nicotianae, M. cerasi, M. varians, Phorodon humuli, Ovatus crataegarius, Takecallis arundicolens (first report in Greece), Uroleucon sonchi, and U. (Uromelan) aeneum. These results contribute to a better understanding of MWMV epidemiology.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate peri-implant marginal bone level changes in relation to crestal or subcrestal implant placement and type of fixture/abutment connection 3 months after implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The duration of the study was 3 months. A total of 105 implants were placed in 81 subjects following a one-stage surgical procedure and assigned into four groups. In the first and second groups, implants with a screwed tapered internal connection were placed subcrestally and crestally, respectively, while in the third and fourth groups, implants with an internal conical seal connection were similarly placed. Clinical recordings and standardized periapical digital radiographs were taken the day of implantation and 3 months later, before placement of the final prosthetic restoration. The modified plaque index (mPLI), modified gingival index (mGI), and probing depths (PD) were recorded at four sites around each implant, and the vertical distance between fixture/abutment junction and alveolar crest at the mesial and distal sites of each implant utilizing subtractive radiography were all measured on placement and at 3 months. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between the four groups for PD. The highest values of mPLI and mGI were recorded for Group 2. The mean (±SE) peri-implant bone loss was recorded as follows: Group 1: 0.68 ± 0.07 mm, Group 2: 0.79 ± 0.06 mm, Group 3: 0.49 ± 0.06 mm, and Group 4: 0.40 ± 0.07 mm. The statistical analysis revealed significant differences in bone resorption between groups with different abutment connections. CONCLUSIONS: The connection between fixture/abutment rather than vertical implant placement in relation to alveolar bone level seems to affect peri-implant marginal bone resorption.

Isolates of NSLAB were obtained from fresh (58 isolates) and mature (38) Feta cheese made at household level in three different mountainous areas, in order to study the effect of the area of production on NSLAB composition and their technological characteristics. Results obtained by SDS-PAGE of whole-cell proteins indicated that the microflora of the fresh cheese was composed of either lactococci (areas 1, 2), or lactococci and enterococci (area 3). The NSLAB microflora of mature cheese was composed almost entirely of lactobacilli species, differing according to the area of production. Species allocation by the SDS-PAGE method was confirmed by sequencing representative strains. Lactococci of cheese made in area 1 exhibited a narrow spectrum of antibacterial activity compared to isolates from areas 2 and 3, while for lactobacilli from all three areas a similar spectrum was noticed. Lactococci from area 2 exhibited higher (P<0.05) mean acidifying activity than lactococci from area 1. The isolates from the three areas also differed in respect of their caseinolytic activity, with preferences towards ß-CN (areas 1 and 2) or αs-CN (area 3). Mean proteolytic activity of lactococci from area 1 was stronger (P<0.05) than that of lactococci from area 2 and the same was observed for their mean aminopeptidase activity, as well as their extent of autolysis at pH5.1. Mean acidifying activity of lactobacilli after 6h was for strains of area 3>2=1. The strains from areas 1 and 3 degraded preferentially αs-CN, while a clear preference towards ß-CN was noticed for strains of area 2; their mean proteolytic activity was for strains of area 1 higher (P<0.05) than strains from area 3. The above results suggest that cheeses from the three areas differ in species composition of NSLAB and their technological properties. Principal component analysis of results on acidifying and proteolytic activities as well as autolysis allowed the distinction of lactococci according to their derivation area enabling the selection of appropriate strains as starters for cheese production in each area.

The objective of this study was to monitor the post-partum variation of polyamine content, in ovine and caprine milk, from indigenous Greek breeds. Twenty samples of ewe and 20 samples of goat colostrum and milk were collected at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 15th day post-partum. Putrescine, spermidine and spermine were measured as dansylated derivatives by high-performance liquid chromatography. Putrescine was the least concentrated of these substances in both milk types. Spermidine was the prevailing polyamine in caprine samples, reaching levels up to 4.41 µmol/l on the 3rd day post-partum. In ovine milk, the profile of the mean concentrations showed greater levels of spermine than spermidine, except for the 5th day post-partum. These data suggest that goat colostrum and ewe milk (15th day) could be considered as good natural sources for these bioactive growth factors, and may become useful raw materials for designing tailored dairy products for specific population groups.

Botrytis cinerea is a pathogen with high genetic variability that has also shown high risk for fungicide resistance development. In total, 1,169 isolates obtained from strawberry (n = 297) and tomato (n = 872) in five geographic regions of Greece were tested for their sensitivity to several botryticides. A high frequency of isolates with multiple resistance to carbendazim, cyprodinil, pyraclostrobin, and boscalid was found in isolates from strawberry. In the isolates from tomato, the predominant phenotype was that of dual resistance to carbendazim and cyprodinil in the Crete island, of single resistance to carbendazim in the region of Preveza, and of sensitive isolates in the region of Kyparissia. None of the tested isolates was found to be fludioxonil resistant. High frequencies of boscalid-resistant phenotypes were observed in the strawberry isolates, while boscalid-resistance frequency in the tomato isolates was lower. H272R was the predominant sdhB mutation, associated with resistance to boscalid, in all the sampled isolates, while other sdhB mutations were found at low frequencies. B. cinerea group S, identified by the presence of a 21-bp insertion in the transcription factor mrr1 gene, was predominant within the tomato isolates obtained from all three sampled regions, with frequencies ranging from 62 to 75% of the isolates; whereas, within strawberry isolates, B. cinerea was predominant, with frequencies of 75 to 95%. Correlations of isolate genotype and fungicide resistance profile showed that B. cinerea sensu stricto isolates were more prone to the development of resistance to boscalid compared with the Botrytis group S isolates, which may explain the observed predominance of B. cinerea sensu stricto in strawberry fields.

BACKGROUND: The antimicrobial peptide LL-37 is a significant molecule of innate immunity and recent studies indicate that it plays an important role in maintaining oral health. Yet limited knowledge exists on its role in oral diseases and oral lichen planus (OLP) in particular. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to examine: 1) the salivary concentration of LL-37 in patients with OLP and healthy subjects, 2) the relation between the type (reticular or erosive) and size of OLP lesions and LL-37 concentration, and 3) the effect of the therapeutic modalities on LL-37 levels. DESIGN: The salivary peptide concentration in samples from 20 patients and 30 healthy subjects at the same age range was determined by ELISA. RESULTS: Despite the wide variation in peptide concentration found in both groups, the healthy subjects exhibited significantly lower levels than patients. Patients with the erosive form had significantly higher peptide concentrations than patients with the reticular form. Systemic treatment with corticosteroids resulted in a significant decrease of the salivary peptide concentration, while other treatment modalities, such as administration of vitamins A and E or local application of corticosteroids had no effect. Improved clinical appearance of the lesions was followed by a decrease in the salivary LL-37 level. CONCLUSIONS: Salivary concentration of LL-37 correlates to the manifestation of mucosa lesions in OLP patients, the highest levels being observed in the most severe cases. This increase in peptide levels may protect against lesion infection and promote a quick wound healing.

OBJECTIVE: The antimicrobial peptide LL-37, a component of innate immunity, has an important role in maintaining oral health. This study aimed to investigate the concentration of free LL-37 in whole saliva of periodontally healthy, edentulous and chronic periodontitis subjects. DESIGN: Unstimulated whole saliva was sampled from 154 subjects (76 periodontally healthy, 20 edentulous, and 58 subjects with chronic periodontitis). All participants were in good general health. The salivary LL-37 was determined by ELISA. RESULTS: The median salivary concentrations of free LL-37 were 30.5, 22.5, and 1.8ng/ml for the healthy, the chronic periodontitis and the edentulous group, respectively. The differences in concentration between the edentulous and the others were statistically significant (Mann-Whitney test, p<0.001). In the healthy subjects, women displayed significantly higher peptide concentrations compared to men (Mann-Whitney test, p<0.05). The intra-subject variation in LL-37 concentration was wider for the healthy (range 0.75-285ng/ml) and chronic periodontitis patients (range 1-207ng/ml) than for the edentulous subjects (range 0.15-4.4ng/ml). CONCLUSIONS: The present findings show that edentulism correlates with a substantial decrease in salivary levels of free LL-37, thus indicating the considerable contribution of the gingival tissues in the secretion of the peptide in the oral environment.

PURPOSE: Psychosomatic indicators, such as heart rate (HR), salivary alpha amylase (sAA) activity, and behavior, can be used to determine stress. This study's aim was to assess the pattern of changes of salivary alpha amylase, heart rate, and cooperative behavior in previously naïve children receiving dental treatment under local anesthesia. METHODS: Included were 30 children with no prior dental experience who needed 4 or more sessions of dental treatment involving local anesthesia. In each session, sAA, HR, and behavior were assessed before and during the application of local anesthesia and at the end of the treatment. RESULTS: The highest sAA value was always observed at the end of each session; overall, the value was lower in the fourth session. HR always increased during the local anesthesia, and did not vary across sessions. No significant relationship was found between child cooperation and either sAA or HR. CONCLUSION: In this sample, child cooperation may not be an accurate indicator of stress. Based on salivary alpha amylase activity changes, dental treatment involving local anesthesia in naïve children appeared to be less stressful after 3 sessions.

Gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) was used to measure the (13)C/(12)C ratios of PLFAs at natural abundance levels from a temperate grassland nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) factorial fertilization experiment in northern Greece. In each plot two rhizosphere samples were derived centred around individual Agrostis capillaris and Prunella vulgaris plants. It was hypothesized that the isotopic signal of microbes that preferentially feed on recalcitrant litter such as fungi would be modified by fertilization more strongly than that of opportunistic microbes using labile C. Microbial community δ(13)C was affected by both P and N fertilization regime and plant species identity. However, we have been unable to detect significant nutrient effects on individual groups of microbes when analyzed separately in contrast to our original hypothesis. Intra-treatment variability, as evaluated from Hartley's F(max) tests in the five first PCA components axes as well as the size of the convex hulls in PCA scoreplots and Mahalanobis distances, was considerably higher in the non-fertilized controls. Moreover, a significant relationship was established between the change in PLFA abundances and their respective changes in δ(13)C for the aggregate of samples and those simultaneously fertilized with N and P. We conclude that use of compound specific isotope analysis in the absence of labelling represents a valuable and overlooked tool in obtaining an insight of microbial community functioning.
